What we did was use the new and now native NLS functionality in BW 7.3 SP9 to archive data off into SAP Sybase IQ. This is something that I have been talking about for years (see this blog post dated 12 months ago) as I have had exposure to the PBS NLS add-on from my Sybase background.
You will be glad to know that the results were simply awesome and I feel that by implementing NLS now as part of your BW strategy could benefit customers in a few ways, namely:
Get the immediate performance benefit of using SAP Sybase IQ ( ** spoiler alert ** SAP Sybase IQ was +- 300 % faster off the DSO level compared to BW running off an InfoCube)
Shrink the size of the database under-lying your BW environment. This has many benefits:
Smaller environment to query on = better performance
Smaller environment to back up
Get customers ready for HANA and know that you have a seamless and slick archiving solution in place with no performance trade-offs. This also means that you do not have to panic about your HANA environment running away from you.
I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts/opinions on this and I hope I got all the BW terminology correct

I recently blogged and shared a video walkthrough of deploying an SAP Analytic Content Bundle, covering the Insurance vertical. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, you can take a look here. In that video, I promised to record a second episode which covered the Telco Analytic Content, which was more in-depth and based on an SAP PowerDesigner model.
Well, here for your viewing pleasure, is Episode 2 – Telco & Utilities Analytic Content.
Download the Telco Analytic Content (available here)
As a reminder, these Analytic Content bundles are pre-built industry content are free, and provide an excellent starting platform as a data warehouse. Let me know what you think of the Analytic Content bundles in the comments, and any feedback on the video.
It is not easy to NOT lean hard on SAP HANA and its capabilities with big data, but we do our best to put together the puzzle of where HANA and IQ fit in the SAP database landscape. Join our special guests Vijay Vijayasanka and Clint Vosloo as we discuss the finer points of SAP HANA and Sybase IQ and try to drive out where the better fit is for business analytics customers today.
Josh sits down with a new friend, Clint Vosloo from BI In The Box, South Africa, to do a Sybase IQ Overview. In this episode, they install a base install of Sybase IQ, do some initial configuration, load in some BIG data and run a few queries.
